Plans: Studio Home

I can't afford rent on a home and a studio. But what if I had a studio that I could live in? That would be the ultimate for a variety of reasons.

It would have to exist on commercially zoned property. It would be divided into two sections that can be sealed off from one another. It might be wise to construct them as two seperate units, for future flexibility in renting or selling.

The home could be upstairs, over the office part of the studio. Then the shooting floor(s) and storage rooms could have really high ceilings. If I had a nice, open stairwell, I could have a locked door at the top for my home, but it needs to be an attractive and inviting doorway for parties. If the home is in front and the garage is in back, a cool element would be to have a catwalk going across one end of the studio and storage room to get to back stairs leading to the garage.

Studio

The office area of the studio needs to have a front lobby, an office, a bathroom, a dressing room, and a dark room. The office should be large enough to have filing cabinets. And somewhere, I need a well-cooled computer room (maybe in the basement).

The back area of the studio needs to have a huge shooting floor. It also needs a large storage room. This should all be at ground level, perhaps with a dock door into the storage room.

Home

This is a bachelor pad, but should be able to accomodate a couple without children. I need a big bedroom with a huge walk-in closet. I need an office. I need a kitchen and a livingroom, which should both be big enough and nice enough for photo sessions and parties. It should have a big master bathroom. I would like to have a spare bedroom, and it should really have a second bathroom. If I don't have a basement, then it needs a laundry room.

I would really like to have a basement, as well. An area for personal storage. A workshop for tools, handloading, and woodworking.

I would like to have a garage, too. Or covered parking at least. Room for three vehicles would be nice.

Exterior

While I was in Detroit, I saw a restaurant that had a stucco exterior. It had architectural elements made in the stucco: squares and such made at different depths. It was set off with two tones of paint. I could do something very similar for the front of my building, in a red or blue theme (or what about black and grey to go with Black Magic Studio), which would be very identifiable. It would make a great photograph to post on my web site. I can install effect lighting in front so it can be seen at night, as well.

The front entrance is by appointment only. I need a nice door, with a covered porch to let people out of the rain. Oh, what if the doorway is set back into the front? The door could be blue/red stained oak, heavy wood with nice furniture. Brushed stainless steel probably wouldn't go ... what about blue/red glazed?

The rest can be simple metal exterior in a matching color.

Workshop

Oh, I may really need a workshop after all. If I am going to spend a lot of time building sets, then it will be important. Hmm. I need to think about this some more.
