Howell Island Conservation Area

Now that I am planning to start bow hunting, Howell Island is looking more interesting to me. There are hunting restrictions, but archery deer hunting is allowed, and shotgun hunting of rabbit and coyote is allowed (no particular recommendation for rabbit populations). I need to get out there and explore it more. The island is about 2500 acres and four miles long. According to the MDC, it is accessible when the Missouri River is below 16 feet on the St. Charles area river gauge, which almost never happens.

I can take my bike there, but it must remain on the trails.

Access by Boat

Every time I want to go out there, the river levels are too high. If I had a boat, I could cross the chute regardless of the water level. I have considered several options, and I've decided to buy a smallish canoe.

Hunting

I will eventually be able to hunt rabbit, deer (archery only), and coyote (shotgun only) here. I have a feeling that I will be doing this mostly alone.
